This bill (S.F. No. 2249) proposes an amendment to Minnesota Statutes 2024, section 124D.111, requiring school districts and charter schools that qualify for but do not participate in the free school meals program to notify parents and students annually. The notice must:

1. Inform families that the school does not participate in the free meal program.
2. Provide an estimate of the total meal costs an average student would pay for meals that would otherwise be free under the program.
3. State that students would receive breakfast and lunch at no cost if the school participated in the program.

The notice must be given in writing within 15 days of the school year starting and be provided in the same languages as the application for educational benefits.
