This bill appropriates $75,000 in fiscal year 2026 and $75,000 in fiscal year 2027 from the general fund to the Minnesota Turf Seed Council. The funds will be used for basic and applied research related to improving the production of forage and turf seed, including new and improved seed varieties and native plants. The research areas include plant breeding, nutrient management, pest management, disease management, yield, and viability. The council may subcontract with a qualified third party to conduct some or all of the research.

Additionally, any unspent funds from the first year will carry over to the second year rather than being canceled. The Minnesota Turf Seed Council is required to prepare a report detailing the use of grant money and related accomplishments. This report must be submitted by January 15, 2027, to the chairs and ranking minority members of the legislative committees overseeing agriculture finance and policy.
